Suicide Prevention

Ohio HB-502  "Each board shall incorporate training in youth suicide awareness and prevention into the in-service training required by division (A) of this section for each person employed by a school district or service center to work in a school as a nurse, teacher, counselor, school psychologist, or administrator, and any other personnel that the board determines appropriate. The board shall require each such person to undergo training in youth suicide awareness and prevention programs once every two years."

Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR): Learn how to recognize the warning signs of suicide, how to talk to the person in crisis, and how to refer them to resources (60-90 minutes).  Learn more on the QPR website.                                                                       

Awareness. Interaction. Direction. (A.I.D.)Learn how to recognize the signs and symptoms of students in distress, how to effectively interact with students who are in distress, and how to locate and provide resources to students in distress (60-90 minutes). 

Awareness. Interaction. Direction. (A.I.D.) for Coaches: Coaches will learn information, skills, and resources to actively assist youth and young adults in mental distress. ODE approved for Coaches Permits (60 minutes).

Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA): Learn how to identify, understand, and respond to an adolescent (ages 12-18) who may be experiencing a mental health or substance use challenge (6.5 hours).  


Kent State University’s Center for Public Policy and Health in the College of Public Health was awarded funding from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration to support the NEO MHAT project. NEO MHAT is a collaborative project with the Educational Service Center of Northeast Ohio; Stark County Educational Service Center; Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services Board of Cuyahoga County; and Stark County Mental Health and Addiction Recovery.
